ENVIRONMENTAL ACOUSTICS - SMART CITIES

Environmental acoustics is a study area that focuses on designing pleasing acoustic environments for people. This field of study considers factors such as noise pollution, and sound quality to create comfortable and functional spaces for individuals. Environmental acoustics plays a crucial role in reducing the negative impact of noise on human health and well-being. It involves designing buildings, public spaces, and transportation systems that minimize noise pollution and promote a healthy acoustic environment.

The concept of smart cities is closely associated with the objective of enhancing the efficiency, sustainability, and livability of urban areas. This indicates that urban users can be effective decision-makers, users and stakeholders in smart cities. For this purpose, audio-visual documentation and measurement are conducted in significant urban areas, such as highways, urban green areas and historical areas, etc., in order to experience various urban scenarios and develop designs that encourage user participation. In this research area, the advantages of virtual reality technology and soundscape approach are actively used to prioritize user perception. Under the headings environmental acoustics and smart city, the alteration of user perception with visual and aural components in virtual reality is analyzed. These studies will contribute to the development of sustainable, environmentally friendly, and smart cities.

Soundscapes aid us greatly in understanding our environment and the impact it has on the people who experience it. In the following project, a soundscape analysis of Dresden was conducted in order to check whether the simulated values of Straßenverkehrslärm Dresden match with reality. We analyzed six places within Dresden. They are added to the following map. Please click on the dots to get further information.

The sound level matches with the values of the underlying map, validating its contents. It also proves that traffic noise is the prevalent noise source in our city.
