The Institute for Acoustics and Speech Communication (IAS) consists of the Professorship for Acoustics and Haptics (Prof. Altinsoy) and the Professorship for Speech Technology and Cognitive Systems (Prof. Birkholz). The institute offers students a broad scientific education in the subjects of acoustics, haptics, language technology and cognitive systems. Research is an important mainstay of the institute and the institute's research groups work in several large research associations and excellence clusters (6G Life, 5G Lab Germany and Center for Human Technology Design). The managing director of IAS is Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Ercan Altinsoy.

Chairholder: Prof.-Dr.-Ing.habil. Ercan Altinsoy Acoustics and haptics are playing an increasingly important role in industry and urban development in order to increase the quality of life. The research concept of the professorship can be summarized under the heading "Perception based Engineering - Development of technical devices through targeted use of auditory and tactile perception properties". The professorship offers students a wide range of lectures, seminars and internships in the fields of acoustics and haptics. The offers of the professorship in the field of electroacoustics are expanded by honorary professor Wolfgang Klippel.

The professorship was inaugurated in 2020 with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Birkholz occupies and conducts research at the interface of language technology, phonetics and machine learning. The professorship offers the compulsory lecture on signal processing and the compulsory elective modules on intelligent audio signal processing and speech technology in the main course. The professorship is closely networked within the faculty and the TU Dresden as well as with numerous institutes of other universities. In addition, there are close contacts to several companies in the areas of speech and signal processing and pattern recognition.
