Brief description
Elderly people often have a hard time using tools in their household with their own hands. While problems that occur due to presbyopia can be corrected with visual aids, but there is no satisfactory universal solution for helping people with motor and sensitive weaknesses of the hands. Alternative operating concepts (e.g. large keys) and input modalities (e.g. voice controls, controls via eye movements) exists, but they have specific disadvantages which do not allow their use as a universal replacement for the "hand" input modality. The aim of the planned project is to develop exactly such a universal solution. A small sensor platform, which can be easily mounted behind the upper incisors, contains a flexible sensor system that precisely measures tongue movements and thus enables an input mode. The movements are converted into control commands and can, for example, control a cursor on a graphical user interface. The research work is carried out in cooperation with Linguwerk GmbH, whose focus is mainly on hardware implementation and ergonomics, while the chair is responsible for the development of sensor data processing and algorithms.
