1 VR Drone Race

Advisor: David Groß

Quadcopters (or drones in everyday language) enable us to fly freely through the air and create stunning aerial photographs. Some people soon started to build smaller and faster drones, so the sport of drone racing was created, where you have to fly your remote controlled drone through an obstacle course as fast as possible. To increase immersion and accuracy, the racers often wear 3D headsets, streaming the video of the drone. In this complex lab, we want to bring drone racing to the virtual world and use VR technology to create an immersive gaming experience.
Areas of work include level design, gameplay logic, drone physics and control, as well as data collection for later analytics (not part of team project).

Requirements:

• Motivation to work with VR in a game setting
• Knowledge of computer graphics basics
• Experience in game engines like Unreal is advantageous
• Creativity in game design
• Basic 3D modelling or level editor skills

2 Digitalisation of the Earth – Art Project

Digitalisation has changed the world and our lifes fundamentally. It is not clear whether humans and nature can adapt to the speed of change or whether digitalisation will become a significant threat to our society and the planet earth. The goal of this topic is the development of an interactive art demonstrator illustrating the digitalisation on a virtual earth in a way that the visitor of the demonstrator is motiviated to think about potential threats. We could gain Anton Ginzburg to guide the students with respect to the aesthetics of the demonstrator.

The virtual earth demonstrator should

• visualize the time evolution of technology density, then transition to
• a dynamic purely digital representation like a game of life simulation adapted to a grid on the surface of the virtual earth (inspiration here)
• provide a dystopian vision like the end/stillstanf of all life in the game of life simulation
• provide an utopian vision like flowers growing out of the game of life simulation restoring nature
• allow the visitor to interact through microfone and or rgb-depth camera with the purely digital representation to steer the virtual world to the dystopian (inspiration: visitors influences game of life by shooting gestures) or the utopian (inspiration: visitors sing where have all the flowers gone) vision.

3 Visualization of Weather Extremes

Advisor: Marzan Tasnim Oyshi

A collaboration with the Chair of Environmental Development and Risk Management  within ScaDs, the goal of this team project is to develop a tool in Virtual Reality that allows the visualization of extreme weather events like heat waves, droughts, and heavy rainfall that possibly might happen in the future.

This application aims to achieve sustained awareness about extreme climate scenarios and help politicians and stakeholders to decide whether to invest in climate forecasting. A flood risk visualization tool is already available. If you want to understand whether VR visualization actually enhances the understanding of climate data, you can also participate in an ongoing online survey on FloodVis.
