Between the Cathedral, the Museum, and Contemporary Art: Field Trip for the Master's Program in Media Computer Science

The Media Computer Science master’s program offers a field trip during the summer semester. This semester, the trip took students to Bautzen and Löbau. The itinerary included Bautzen Cathedral, the special exhibition “Experiencing Color—See · Discover · Try” at the Bautzen City Museum, and the Haus Schminke, designed by Hans Scharoun, in Löbau.

On a beautiful summer day, our small group began with a tour of Bautzen Cathedral. As students majoring in the Media Computer Science Department, design education is an integral part of our curriculum. An understanding of composition, structure, and geometry plays an important role in this and is also reflected in architecture. What is particularly remarkable about Bautzen Cathedral is that it unites both the Catholic and Protestant denominations under one roof. This unique feature is also reflected in the building’s spatial structure. It’s well worth a visit!

After a short break, which the students used to take a brief stroll through town, there was a guided tour of the city museum. The museum director, Ms. Kaiser, impressively shared her passion for the subject of color with us. The interactive special exhibition offered numerous opportunities to refresh and deepen our basic knowledge of color.

In the afternoon, we had another appointment at Haus Schminke in Löbau. In the beautiful garden by the pond, we were able to relax a bit after our walk from the train station before immersing ourselves in the architecture of classical modernism. Haus Schminke is one of the four most important residential buildings of classical modernism. The spacious glass facade largely blurs the boundary between the garden and the interior. As a result, the outdoor space becomes an integral part of the living environment.

With many new impressions to take home, we headed back to Dresden in the evening.
