The 2022 IXLAB Summer Workshop will be dedicated to the study of sound and space.
In collaboration with acclaimed composer Esmeralda Conde Ruiz and Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden, we will explore the creation of spatial sonic experiences. We will construct real-time systems to transform sound and music into structures and environments that can be explored in virtual reality. We will also experiment with different techniques for capturing and replaying spatial sonic and musical events and explore the concept of "sonic creatures", autonomous embodied agents that consume and produce sound within space, reacting to their environment and one another. Our workshop will use the latest in large-scale multi-user mixed reality techniques.
We will examine the use of generative and emergent systems and how, when coupled with musical instruments, sounds and the voice, they might be used as interfaces for sculpting virtual worlds. We will study concepts related to emergence, complexity and real-time systems, as well as cross-sensory perception and binding and ideas of musical, spatial and amodal perception and cognition. In particular, we will study sonic experience through the lens of "4E cognition" - as an activity that is fundamentally embodied, enactive and embedded and extended through space.
The workshop is aimed at Informatik and Medieninformatik students with some knowledge of 3D graphics and programming, but students from other faculties or schools are welcome. Highly beneficial is some expertise with Unity. Participants with no experience with Unity will be asked to prepare for the workshop by teaching themselves the basics of Unity before the workshop begins.
Format and Schedule: A 2-week workshop 12th-23rd September 2022. Monday – Friday, 10-5pm.
