Lecture "Computer Architecture and Hardware Lab"
Applicability:
This course is intended for students enrolled in the revised Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in Computer Science (enrollment beginning in the winter semester of 2025).
Contents:
The module covers the structure and analysis of simple analog and digital circuits, such as RC circuits, combinational circuits, and flip-flops, as well as sequential and state-machine-based circuits and the von Neumann architecture.
Building on these essential fundamentals of computer engineering, the module further covers the structure and function of the individual components of a computer architecture, as well as their organization and interaction. This knowledge is acquired through examples, ranging from the implementation of circuit networks and logic circuits at the gate level, through information representation, encoding, and processing, to the instruction set as the link to software, and finally to the components of a computer such as the control unit, the arithmetic unit, registers, and memory. The various types of parallelism, networking, and performance evaluations of complex computer systems are also covered in the module.
Schedule:
The course takes place during the summer semester. It consists of 3 SWS of lectures, 2 SWS of exercises, and 2 SWS of lab work. Information about the lab can be found on the website of the Chair of Adaptive Dynamic Systems
