Dresden and its university
Nature around Dresden
On Foot
Dresden is a city that has been built flatly so our possibilities to walk on foot outside of the campus are limited. You can take a walk in the “Großer Garten” or the “Alaunpark” to relax a bit.
By Bike
Not only is Dresden beautiful, it is also adapted to bicycles. Nearly everywhere you can find lanes for cyclists. Besides, in the summer, it is lovely to go on a cycling tour at the bank of the river Elbe in direction to the Saxon Switzerland or just explore the surrounding area of Dresden.
By Car
The car offers the big advantage to explore places that are difficult to get to. In the summer you can go to a quarry lake and just relax. For this you shouldn’t forget a grill!
Sächsische Schweiz
The highlight for all of you who love to hike is the Saxon Switzerland. Pros as well as amateurs can let off steam and enjoy the beauty of nature.
Culture
Theatre of Dresden
The “Elb-Florenz”, as Dresden is also called, offers a lot of famous as well as less famous theatres. The most popular theatres are the Semperoper, the Staatsschauspiel, the Theaterkahn (a boat where you can enjoy plays), the Comödie, the Felsenbühne Rathen and the Herkuleskeule. On top of that, there are events like the Lange Nacht der Dresdner Theater (the long night of theatres in Dresden). All that should be affordable for students: each first Tuesday of the month, remaining tickets are sold for 3.50€. You can also purchase cheaper tickets for parents and friends who do not have a student card and often you can get hold of very good seats. In the Staatsschauspiel, students who are in their first semester (must bring along your certificate of matriculation) can purchase a ticket for 3.50€; students of higher semesters for 7€.
Moreover, there is the Bühne, the theatre of the TU. Student actors present an accomplished combination of classic, modern, and experimental plays at the Weberplatz which is located in the east of the campus. To join in is explicitly welcome!
Kino im Kasten
A bit outside of the campus, in the August-Bebel-Straße, you can find the Kino im Kasten (KiK). In no time, the cleaned-up lecture hall turns up into a real cinema. There, at 20:30, you can escape from the dreary everyday life and dive into exciting screenlands also for the small budget.
Der Tatort
It is a part of the student everyday life to watch the “Tatort” (a German crime series) with others on a Sunday night. If you do not want to watch it from home, you can watch it in theScheune, the Groovestation or at Kathy's Garage in the Neustadt.
Each summer, a huge open-air cinema with a lovely view at the historical town is built up at the northern bank of the Elbe (the so called “Königsufer"). This cinema does not only present movies, but also concerts of famous bands like KIZ, Cro and Roland Kaiser.
Christmas markets
During the Advent season, a lot of Christmas markets open their gates in Dresden. The biggest ones are the “Après-Ski-Markt” at the Postplatz and the “Striezelmarkt” at the Altmarkt. The medieval Christmas market in the stable yard of the “Residenzschloss” is valid as an inside tip. This Christmas market is free during the week, from Friday to Sunday it costs 3€.
Since the most famous and most successful club of Dresden managed the promotion in 2016, you can now watch with excitement games of the 2nd national league at the DDV stadium.
Party
Even during the week, many clubs and pubs in the Neustadt offer an exciting program. Each Monday, as an example, you can go out to the Science Café in the “Groovestation”, to the “Jazzfanatics” in the “Scheune” and, very popular, to the “Rosies” that does not ask a price on Mondays. You can inform yourselves about current events at the different web sites of the locations.
This district festival in the outer Neustadt traditionally takes place every third weekend in June since 1990. It is organized by committed inhabitants. In the past, it used to be a political event against speculation, rack renting, displacement of the inhabitants and destruction, but nowadays it is a festival of the neighbourhood, art and culture. However, due to increasing commercialization of the BRN, they are thinking about postponing the festival for a few years. This is why the future of the BRN is uncertain.
With its 16 student clubs, Dresden has one of the highest density in all of Germany. Aside from conventional clubs, you can also find a lot of themed ones such as the “Traumtänzer”, the GAG18”, the “Borsi”, and a lot more. Often, there are events that are worth a visit like the “Bockbieranstich” (the first draft from a freshly tapped cask of beer) at “Club11”.

Around the university
From the canoe driving up to the tram Pole's jumping, the university offers a sport for everyone. Many offers also include advancer's courses at very high level or deny tournaments and competitions like the university masteries.
The demand for some sports (e.g. volleyball, climbing, rowing) is very high. You only have a chance to get in these courses if you immediately register yourselves on time. Normally, the registration begins on the first Tuesday of the semester. So, get a move on!
There are numerous possibilities to engage oneself and to design the university life, whether in the student representatives or in the initiative for environment. The students’ council published an own information brochure that is why we give only a short overview. Over 40 university groups offer a great possibility to get to know Dresden and its people, to get in contact with companies (e.g. the “bonding-studenteninitiative e.V.) and to get an insight into the complexity of a racing car (e.g. “Elbflorace Formula Student Team TUD e.V.).
14 canteens offer very highly nutritious and varied culinary meals. In the “Bio-Mensa”, in the “Grill Cube” or in the “Siedepunkt”, which is also open at weekends, everyone will find something good to eat.
In your student identity card, a semester ticket which is valid in all ÖNV connections in Dresden is integrated. Moreover, you can use with it all regional trains in Saxony, as well as, e. g. , the ferry in Saxon Switzerland. You find closer information on the web site of StuRa Dresden.
