Orientation Week - ESE 2023
Thank you very much for choosing TU Dresden for your studies in Material Science (Werkstoffwissenschaft), Process Engineering (Verfahrens- und Naturstofftechnik) or Mechanical Engineering (Maschinenbau).
From October 2nd until October 8th there is an orientation week (ESE-Woche) taking place to introdruce you to your new university and the city of Dresden. Therefore we planned a few events, where you can catch up information regarding your studies, connect with fellow students and meet new people.
Already on Thursday, September 28, 2023, before the ESE week, we invite you to a cozy game night.

Study group enrolment
The study group enrolment ("Seminargruppeneinschreibung") is mandatory for all new students.
For the enrolment you need to use OPAL. Here you can find a guide on how to use this.
These groups are also the groups you do your excercise courses with.

PROGRAMME
The ESE really starts on Monday with a city tour for all New Dresdeners. In the evening we explore the bars and pubs of the Neustadt together.
There is a bike tour on Tuesday morning. Please bring your own bikes with you. In the evening, the Dresden student clubs organize their club tour.
But you shouldn't drink too much, because the highlight of the ESE follows on Wednesday, the Maschinenwesen-Rallye! You have to fulfill a wide variety of tasks at many stations in the city throughout the day.
UNI-Kompakt will follow on Thursday, where you will find all the important organizational information. This is followed by the matriculation ceremony.
The mandatory information event for postgraduate students and the welcome event follow on Friday. Afterwards we will show you your future places of work on the campus tour and end the day with a barbecue.
On Saturday we offer a hike to Saxon Switzerland.

The Enrolment for the "ESE-Gruppe" is only neccessary, if you are a graduate or masters student ("Aufbaustudent oder Masterstudent"), and want to participate in the orientation week. It has no consequences for your studies once the lectures begin.

On the Thursday before the ESE week, we cordially invite you to a cozy game night. We have prepared some snacks and board games, but you are also welcome to bring your own games, snacks, and beverages (yes, including alcoholic ones).

Meeting Point: Milchpavillion by the Japanischen Palais
Getting to know your new city is never a mistake. Let's make a city tour! It will take between 2 and 3 hours. Our meeting point will be the pavillon by the Japanese Palais and the tour will end on the castle square.

Please join your respective group at the meeting point, the supervisors are already waiting for you. Afterwards the group heads towards Neustadt (Albertplatz). And then it starts for you.
For 4 hours you and your group will visit the bars in Neustadt. Each bar has its own individual specialty, where you are guaranteed not to get bored. Finally, you go to the club, where you can chat with the other groups about your experience over a drink.
Between the individual bars, your group leaders will also have a few spirits with them. In order to make your enjoyment hygienic and environmentally conscious, you can purchase shot glasses with the FSR logo and lanyard for €1 each.

On the ESE club tour you will be led through Dresden city center from student club to student club. Look forward to an entertaining evening in a variety of atmospheres.

The MW student council will take you to the MW rally around the TU campus. At the HSZ forecourt you will be divided into groups with which you can enjoy the day through Dresden!
Please remember the 5 Euro participation fee in cash!

During the campus tour, FSR students and students in higher semesters will guide you through the campus in their respective seminar groups and show you the buildings that are most relevant to you. All groups start at the HSZ. After the tour, you are welcome to head back towards the HSZ, as we will be having a barbecue on the meadow. So look forward to fun facts about the buildings and a few tips for studying.
After that we Grill on the meadow infront of the Potthoff Bouilding.

Duration: approx. 6 hours
For the hiking trip we will Take the S1 from Dresden Mainstation at 11:29 o'clock to Rathen. Than we will cross the elbe by ferry, which is not included in the semester ticket for this you need to bring 3€ in cash. The Route takes us from Rathen past the "Amselsee" to the "Hockstein" and then back trough the Polenz Valley. You can have a look at the Route on Mapy.cz.
Please be advised that you should have suitible clothing for hiking. We will take a break in the midle there is no way to get something to eat or drink there so please bring it yourself.
