H5 (BR4): Technological learning and the competitiveness of selected hydrogen technologies
Numerous analyses show that hydrogen can play an important role in the energy system in the future in order to achieve the politically set climate targets (cf. e.g. BMWI 2021). However, from today's perspective, it is unclear for many applications and sectors whether and in what quantities hydrogen will become established in competition with other energy carriers. A major uncertainty with regard to the competitiveness of technologies is fundamentally their development in terms of efficiency, risks, environmental impacts, and costs. The assessment of the perspectives and potentials of new hydrogen applications is therefore a central topic in order to be able to assess future (hydrogen-based) energy systems and to develop strategic perspectives. A systematic approach to holistic system assessment is imperative. In addition to estimating the development of costs, parameters on technical developments (including efficiency, scalability, etc.) must also be taken into account. In general, the prospects of technologies can be assessed either on the basis of technological research and considerations or by extrapolation using experience curves. Within the framework of the PhD project applied for here, the focus of the scientific work will be on hydrogen electrolysis and different types of fuel cells. In doing so, a selection is to be made through existing data and the relevance of previously investigated application possibilities.
