THE RESEARCH GROUP AS RESEARCH CENTRE

As structure unit of TU Dresden, we are always interested in basic and application research. As research unit and co-operation partner, we carry out scientific theoretical and experimental investigations – from modelling, parameter identification and validating to practical feasibility.

Basic reasearch

As part of basic research, novel materials or groups of materials are often investigated with respect to their dynamic fatigue strength. Likewise, calculation methods of structural durability are scrutinised; obtained results are made available to engineers through improved regulation or individual solutions.

Industrial research

In the framework of industrial research, methods for calculated or experimental structural durability and fatigue life assessment are researched and validated. In addition to process development, their practical application is also in the focus, both at TU Dresden and its industry partner.

Co-operation within the framework of basic research

Basic research in the area of structural durability is largely theoretically based. Due to the largely empirical approach towards structural durability, research on novel materials is a priority. The structural durability and dynamic fatigue strength of these materials are being investigated against various factors leading to the derivation of calculation models. These model developments and validations, as well as parameter identifications, are often combined with statistical studies to assess the practicality or the validity of the results obtained by this method.

Co-operation within the framework of industrial research

Industrial research, unlike the predominantly material-oriented basic research, is often component-oriented. Practical solutions to the problems of industrial partners are in the foreground. In principle, calculation models are also developed and validated or external parameters of dynamic fatigue strength are investigated. However, they are often associated with the exploration of novel relevant test methods for parameter identification or experimental life cycle verification.

Long-term testing experience and the extensive existing testing technology serves us in our efforts of outstanding research in the areas of structural durability and Experimental Mechanics.
