Award winning: Group spanning cooperation for the restoration of historical steel structures
Two groups at the TU Dresden – the Chair of Materials Technology (Dr. Schubert, Dr. Vetter, Prof. Leyens) and the Chair of Steel Construction (Dr. Sieber, Prof. Stroetmann) – have closely worked together over several years on the restoration of historical steel structures.
Construction steels from around 1900, which can be still found in many structures (e.g. bridges, train stations), show worse manufacture related properties than modern construction steels. In order for these structures to cope with modern loads it is necessary to have comprehensive restoration concepts. The combination of old and new steels in the complete structure pose extensive challenges for steel and material engineers.
Some initial results from this work was presented in a poster at the 50. Metallography meeting (21.-23.9.2016 in Berlin). The poster was distinguished with the 1st Prize.
