Profile
The performance and cost effectiveness of high tech products depends crucially on the use of appropriate materials. Innovation in these areas arises in part through the close cooperation of industrial users with the scientific community.
The activities of the Chair of Materials Technology at the Institute of Materials Science in the Technical University of Dresden are focussed on innovative material systems and their production for use amongst others in the fields of aviation, transport as well as energy engineering. Research and development is oriented towards the material application, with can emphasis also placed on manufacturing and economic factors. The main goal of the scientific groundwork is to obtain the knowledge necessary for the materials production and use.
The research focus of the chair is reflected in the lecture courses. The Chair of Material Technology is responsible for the material technology foundation courses of all students undertaking the degree courses Mechanical Engineering and Process Engineering/ Natural Material Engineering. In later semesters specialised lecture courses are offered in the areas of construction materials, surface engineering and aerospace materials. Students of materials science obtain in the fields of metallic materials, material testing and metalographie a fundamental education into which new examples from current practice are constantly being introduced. A range of interesting and current themes for student research projects and diploma theses, as well as for doctoral thesis – often with the close co-operation of industry – complete the attractive opportunities for students.
