Development of an Arc-PVD- coating technology for the targeted adjustment of cutting edge radii of cutting tools
Within the R&D-project a new Arc-PVD- coating technology is to be developed. This technology will enable the targeted adjustment of cutting edge radii by the growing film only.
State of the art coatings of cutting edges are always connected with an edge rounding because of the growing film. The film thickness adds to the edge radius in the simplest case. Only very thin films are applicable if a sharp cutting edge is needed. So only a limited tool performance is reached.
This drawback is to overcome within the project. The sharpening effect is based on energetic coating particles and a distortion of the plasma edge layer in the near surrounding of the cutting edge. A directed edge grow is realized by a targeted variation of bias voltage, reactive gas pressure and cutting edge orientation. As well as very sharp edges but also defined rounded and stable edges can be produced by this technology. In addition optimized coating materials are to develop and tested within application oriented test procedures. So a wide range of possible applications can be addressed.
