Running Belt Measurements
After a longer period of time the running belt has been reinstalled to test section. Moving ground sections in wind tunnels are used to properly model the boundary condition at the floor when conducting measurements on vehicles. In vehicle aerodynamics the ground always moves together with the relative wind. This time, the moving ground has been qualified for automotive purposes. So far, it has solely been used for airplanes in ground effect during take off and landing. This is the pupose it had originally been designed for.
The car model used is a standardised generic body that is used for aerodynamic measurement and calculation in various configurations: notchback, fastback, hatchback and pick up. It is designated the MIRA-model after the Motor Industry Research Association.
Due to the blockage caused by model mounting only the station wagon has been used. In order to see stronger effects of the rigid/moving ground the model was mounted with negative angle of attack, equipped with a front spoiler as well as lowered closer to the ground without wheels.
