Kickoff of the COSMIC Project
On June 23, the kickoff meeting for the COSMIC project ( CFD-based robust active fluid stabilization in microgravity for precise satellite attitude control) took place. In this project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, the Chair of Flight Mechanics and Control (FMR) and the Chair of Fluid Mechanics (PSM) at the TUD Dresden University of Technology, in collaboration with Airbus Defence and Space, to develop a robust control law to minimize the effects of fuel sloshing for modern space missions. A particular challenge here is the altered behavior of liquids in a low-gravity environment.
The PSM is focusing on a detailed CFD analysis of fuel sloshing under microgravity conditions for realistic configurations in order to develop a well-founded, robust, and accurate sloshing surrogate model for realistic tank geometries using machine learning methods (ML). Using the developed surrogate model, the FMR will establish a realistic satellite reference system that couples the sloshing surrogate model with satellite and structural dynamics, thereby designing a robust satellite attitude control system with combined liquid stabilization.
