Conceptual design for the integration of ring-shaped hydrogen pressure storage tanks into a wheel loader.
The approval of the HZwo:WheelTank project is intended to address a key technical challenge in the integration of hydrogen-based propulsion systems into mobile machinery. Together with project partners HÖRMANN Vehicle Engineering GmbH, Lightweight Structures Engineering GmbH, FAE Elektrotechnik GmbH & Co. KG, and Liebherr-Werk Bischofshofen GmbH, the project aims to utilize previously unused installation space for hydrogen storage without significantly increasing the machines’ external dimensions. The approach is based on ring-shaped hydrogen pressure storage tanks that can be integrated into the wheel or rim structure. This increases the total available storage volume, thereby extending operating time and improving the cost-effectiveness of hydrogen-powered mobile machinery.
