Objective:
  • Basic research on the pairing rack / pinion to assess the load capacity and types of damage of automotive steering gears
  • Experimental investigation of fatigue strength (S-N-curves) and wear behaviour
  • Experimental investigation of structural integrity during various overload conditions
Approach:
  • Utilisation of a servo-hydraulic 3-axis test rig to apply static or dynamic loads on steering gears or complete servo steering systems
  • Application of a torque on the input shaft of the steering pinion which acts against resistance forces on the track rods
  • Simulation of various driving conditions and examination of their impact on the system‘s components
Results:
  • The main goal is to detect weaknesses in systems before the start of production and to guarantee the quality of steering systems during production.
