• Deep rolling and shot peening is used to increase the shaft fatigue strength in the industry
• Investigation of the notch points at the undercut and the joining surfaces at the interference fit
• Objective: to improve the result of the calculation according to DIN 743 and FKM guideline in order to make use of the immense potential in the component design

• Theoretical investigations: evaluation of test results from the literature, forming simulations, FE analyses to determine local stresses
• Experimental investigations: extensive fatigue strength tests (stair tread tests) on component-like, surface-treated specimens of five different materials (tension-compression, rotating bending and torsion), material investigations

• Extensive knowledge of the mechanisms of action and influencing factors of mechanical surface hardening
• Manageable rough calculation, which enables an estimation of the load-bearing capacity of mechanically surface-strengthened shafts and axles even without simulation
