After completing her doctorate, Ms Paetzold-Byhain worked as a senior engineer at the Chair of Design Technology at the University of Erlangen, where her research focused on mechatronics and senior-friendly product development. There she began to set up a working group dealing with senior-friendly product development.
In 2009, she was appointed to the Universität der Bundeswehr. As holder of the professorship for Technical Product Development and head of the institute of the same name at the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, the research focus expanded into the area of Systems Engineering. In July 2021, Kristin Paetzold-Byhain was appointed professor at the Technische Universität Dresden and has since held the professorship for Virtual Product Development.
She is involved in the VDI-Fachbereich Produktentwicklung und Mechatronik and is also co-chair of the SIG „Human Behavior in Design“ of the Design Society. Kristin Paetzold-Byhain is a member of the Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Produktentwicklung (WiGeP).
