The course teaches basic concepts for the development of products in interdisciplinary teams. To this end, familiar methods from mechanical development are expanded to include interdisciplinary and discipline-specific approaches (electrics, software, project management). The methods learned are applied to a concrete development example (quadrocopter). The development takes place from the first design concepts to the detailed construction to the production and testing of a first prototype.

The course teaches the basics of technical illustration, freehand drawing, technical drawings of individual parts and assemblies, as well as knowledge of selected standard parts and their use. The lecture contents are deepened in the exercises, in which, among other things, technical drawings of increasing complexity are created. The independent construction of a machine assembly and the corresponding drawings is carried out during the semester in a voluntary assignment.

The course teaches principles and rules for the force- and production-oriented design of machine components. In addition to traditional manufacturing processes (metal casting and machining), modern processes such as additive manufacturing are also considered. Building on the first semester, the topic of tolerance management is deepened and expanded. In the exercises, the functionalities of complex assemblies are discussed, production-oriented design guidelines are applied, drawings of components and assemblies are created and calculations of dimensional tolerances are carried out. The constructive development of a complex machine assembly can be carried out within an assignment.

The course teaches strategies and concepts of product data management (PDM) for controlling product and process complexity for the mechanical engineering application area. Models and methods for the organisation and management of product data (articles, documents, product structures) and for the management of engineering processes (e.g. release and change processes) are presented. The course uses concrete examples to show which approach is promising for the introduction of PDM in the company and how to proceed with regard to the creation of product and process models. Furthermore, CAD integration and collaborative engineering, which are important for efficient work with PDM systems, are discussed. In the exercise, the practical handling of the PDM system Aras Innovator is taught. The students are enabled to think in a process-oriented way and to deal with the most important methods for product data and process management in the entire product life cycle.

The course introduces methods and tools within the process chain of reverse engineering. Starting with a physical object, which is digitised using various techniques (such as optical, volume tomographic or tactile tools), processed and then converted into a CAD model for further use in the CAD/CAM environment, procedures and techniques to be used are presented. In an exercise, the process chain is deepened on the software side (Polyworks) using examples from the industrial environment. This series of events is underpinned by numerous application examples from art and culture, mechanical and plant engineering and the medical sector.

The course deals with selected methods and tools for the automated synthesis and analysis of CAD models. The starting point is the CAD software SolidWorks. Programs for the automated generation of geometry and analysis of existing assemblies are developed for this software with the help of the API. Furthermore, the interface to other software products (Excel, MathCad) will be dealt with.

Digital models are increasingly used in product development and use. The 3D CAD model generated as a result of the constructive design forms the basis for applications, manufacturing, assembly, documentation, marketing, training, inspection and supports the operation of technical products. Visualisation is a central task here.
The lecture introduces model and data structures and deals in particular with scene graphs. Furthermore, selected process chains with the necessary interfaces and data transformations are discussed.
The exercises take place in the CAD laboratory. Visualisations are created from SolidWorks models using the EON-Studio system. The focus is on model transformation, movement and interaction, as well as the use of textures.
