Competition for the best €99 bioreactor - anniversary edition at TU Dresden

On 10 and 11 July 2025, the Chair of Bioprocess Engineering at TU Dresden will host the competition for the best €99 bioreactor for the tenth time - organized in cooperation with Netzwerk Bioverfahrenstechnik Dresden e.V.

As in previous years, student teams from colleges and universities throughout Germany will compete against each other to demonstrate their skills in bioprocess engineering. The challenge: to design and build a functional bioreactor with a maximum budget of €99, in which a 24-hour cultivation is carried out without intervention.

This year, the focus is on citrate production with Yarrowia lipolytica. The aim is to obtain citric acid from food industry waste - a process with great potential for sustainable industrial applications, for example as an antioxidant.

Traditionally, the presentation of the reactor concepts and the award ceremony take place as part of the Chair of Bioprocess Engineering's summer party, to which alumni are also cordially invited.
