Prof. André Wagenführ retires
Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Wagenführ hands over his chair to his successor Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alexander Pfriem on 3 September at a ceremony to mark 70 years as Chair of Wood Technology and Fiber Materials Technology at TU Dresden. On October 1, André Wagenführ retires at the age of 66.
André Wagenführ studied process engineering at TU Dresden from 1980, specializing in the Department of Wood and Fiber Materials Engineering (HFT). He completed his studies ahead of schedule in 1984 with a degree in engineering and remained at the department as a research assistant and doctoral student of Prof. Gerhard Kühne. In 1988, he obtained his doctorate in engineering with the topic "Practical investigations into the use of biotechnological active principles in the wood-based materials industry" (summa cum laude). After two years at the former WTZ Holz Dresden (now the Institute for Wood Technology Dresden), Wagenführ went into industry for three years in 1990. He worked as a production manager in the furniture industry and as an application technology consultant in the adhesives industry.
From 1993 to 1999, Wagenführ worked at the Institute for Wood Technology Dresden (IHD), where he took over the management of the raw wood department with the wood anatomy laboratory from his father Dr. Rudi Wagenführ at the end of 1993. At the end of 1999, he was appointed to the TU Dresden as a full professor with a chair in wood and fiber materials technology. In his teaching activities for three faculties of the TU, in particular as head of the diploma course "Wood Engineering and Natural Materials Technology" in the degree program "Process Engineering and Natural Materials Technology" (direct and postgraduate course at the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering), he represented the subjects of wood anatomy and wood preservation in particular.
However, Wagenführ is also responsible for the teaching integration of his Chair in the Master's degree program "Wood Science and Technology" (Faculty of Environmental Sciences) and in the degree program "Teacher Training - Vocational Schools" with the profile "Wood Technology" (Faculty of Education).
From 2002 to 2016, he was Managing Director of the Institute of Wood and Paper Technology. After its dissolution in 2016, his Chair became part of the new Institute of Natural Materials Technology and he integrated paper technology teaching into the degree course in Wood Technology and Fiber Materials Technology with the support of Honorary Professor Frank Miletzky.
In recognition of his scientific achievements, Wagenführ was elected a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig in 2006. In 2008, he was appointed to the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech). There, he works on an honorary basis in the thematic network "Biotechnology and Bioeconomy", where he also led the study "Wood-based Bioeconomy" 2022.
The research areas of his chair are future-oriented, whereby Wagenführ himself sees his focus primarily in wood modification, veneer treatment and sandwich and natural fiber composites for lightweight construction applications.
He promotes interdisciplinary research through strategically proven structures (networks such as Ligno Sax) and, together with his research groups, tackles national and global challenges of the present and future, such as energy-efficient production technologies like laser-assisted joining on narrow surfaces (Wilhelm Klauditz Prize 2009) and wood fiber-based oil binders for environmental protection (Wilhelm Klauditz Prize 2018).
Close national and international cooperation in teaching and research is important to him. Wagenführ cooperates closely with universities and research institutions in Germany and abroad (e.g. with universities in Hanoi and Cantho (Vietnam), Sopron (Hungary) and Zvolen (Slovakia)).
Outstanding projects under his leadership include, for example, sub-projects in the two lightweight construction excellence clusters Ecemp (Saxony) and Merge (Federal Government/DFG). The presentation of current research results at the self-organized conference series "Holztechnologisches Kolloquium" and "Holzanatomisches Kolloquium" (together with IHD and now Forstnutzung/Tharandt) has been a special concern of his.
Wagenführ is (has been) an honorary member of several boards, advisory boards and advisory boards of networks and associations. He is co-editor of the "Taschenbuch der Holztechnik" (three editions) and the former trade journal "Holztechnologie" as well as co-author of the reference books "Holz-Lexikon" and "Beschreibung und Bestimmung von Bauholzpilzen". In 2022, he published the seventh revised and supplemented edition of his father Rudi Wagenführ's famous "Holzatlas". In the "Springer Handbook of Wood Science and Technology" published in 2023, Wagenführ was responsible for the chapter on "Veneers and Veneer based Products". He is involved in around 400 publications (specialist articles, conference papers, over 40 patents, posters, etc.). As head of research at TU Dresden, he has led more than 160 national and international research projects. During his tenure, he has also supervised 36 doctoral students at the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering at TU Dresden and was a sought-after reviewer for many external doctorates, appointments and research proposals, including at the AiF, DFG, PTJ and DBU.
In his retirement, André Wagenführ intends to continue his voluntary work in the above-mentioned science academies on issues relating to the future of technology science and technology policy and to be available to industry as an innovation consultant in the field of wood technology.
