Climate lab

In the climate lab, paper samples are tested under standardized climatic conditions (temperature, humidity) in accordance with applicable standards. The tests include basic properties, optical properties, surface properties (roughness, smoothness, etc.) and strength after various processes and loads, as well as penetration and barrier properties against various media.

Paper pulp technology lab

In our paper pulp technology lab, fibrous materials are prepared in a targeted manner and precisely analyzed - from defibration to refining and sheet formation. Using modern measurement technology, we record the dewatering and swelling behavior, fiber morphology such as fiber length, width and shape. We also test the recyclability of paper products in accordance with current standards.

Chemical lab / Paper finishing lab

The chemical and paper finishing lab is primarily used to analyze water with regard to ingredients and physical properties. We also produce coating colors that are comprehensively tested for their properties. These are coated onto paper, cardboard and films using various processes in order to optimize barrier properties, appearance and printability in a targeted manner.

Microscopy lab

With the Keyence high-speed digital microscope, biogenic and non-biogenic materials, fibers, composites and processes can be comprehensively analyzed in the macro, micro and sub-micro range. 3D measurement, variable illumination, UV/fluorescence technology and high-speed imaging enable detailed material characterization in deep-focus images.

Physiklabor

Das klimatisierte Physiklabor bietet neben zwei Universalprüfmaschinen verschiedene Messmethoden zur mechanischen und sorptiven Charackterisierung von Holz, Furnier und Holzwerkstoffen. Daneben sind hier verschiedene zerstörungsfreie Prüfmethoden wie zum Beispiel das GOM Messsystem, die experimentelle Modalanalyse sowie ein Wärmeleitmessgerät beheimatet.

Bio lab

Mycological tests and durability and effectiveness analyses of protective substances and materials are carried out in our biolaboratory. Fungi are used as natural fiber materials and for mycological wood modification. The equipment includes a sterile workbench, incubators for fungal cultures, an autoclave for sterilization and modern analysis devices.

Plastics laboratory

Thermoplastic polymers and our natural (fiber) materials are compounded in a heating/cooling mixer (up to approx. 20 kg/h) or in a twin-screw extruder (from 50 g/h to 2.5 kg/h). Produced filaments or granules are analyzed with regard to their processing properties and further processed by 3D printing, compression molding or injection molding.

Fiber material technical center

In the fiber materials technology center, we produce fiberboards and molded parts in variable sizes, densities and from a wide variety of materials. The materials can be pre-dried or thermomodified in drying cabinets. Various units are available for gluing. Three laboratory presses make it possible to press the boards and shape the materials.

Kalthalle (Technikum)

In der Kalthalle können an der rückkühlbaren Heißpresse Vollholz und Furniere verdichtet werden. Außerdem können Plattenwerkstoffe verleimt und verpresst werden. Daraus entstehen beispielsweise Drumsticks oder Griffbretter. Außerdem kann hier den Studierenden im Praktikum die Trocknung von Vollholz an unserem Labortrockner in der Praxis gezeigt werden.
