The overall objective of the project is the development and validation of the process chain for the production of lignowool composites from wood wool and biobased thermoplastic fibers. The process chain includes the production of technical wood wool, the production of textile wood wool-thermoplastic tapes by fibre preparation, carding, stretching, tape production and thermostabilization and finally the composite consolidation to lignowool composites by thermopressing. In the completed first project phase (FNR funding code: 22020318), the basic technological feasibility of textile wood wool thermoplastic tapes and composites based on them was successfully demonstrated. In the second project phase applied for here, the further challenges arising from the preliminary project will be systematically investigated. The sub-goals of the project consist of improving the laboratory wood wool developed in the feasibility study, developing the wood wool processing process and the interface processes that serve to link the individual processing stages. Furthermore, the textile technology process chain will be expanded and completed through implementation on an industry-oriented pilot line and systematic investigations into the consolidation and shaping of the composite materials using thermo presses.
The project is being carried out by a consortium of two scientific institutions and two companies:
- IDEAL Automotive GmbH
- Company ZKS, worsted yarn spinning mill Zwickau
- TUD Dresden University of Technology, Institute for Textile Machinery and High Performance Textile Materials, ITM
