Objective
The project focuses on the further development of a novel process for the partial perforation and plasticization of wood-based materials, as well as their forming to produce 3D molded parts. Using parametric modeling, local deformation zones are introduced into the wood-based panels to be formed via perforation patterns specifically developed and adapted for the part to be produced. These perforation patterns significantly increase the forming potential of conventional wood-based materials. In the forming process, the partially perforated wood-based panels are briefly softened using steam and then formed into single-layer 3D molded parts using a vacuum. The goal of the project is to further develop the process from the laboratory scale (TRL 4) to prototype application in an industry-ready environment (TRL 6). If successfully implemented, this new technology can provide an eco-friendly alternative to currently established petroleum-based thermoplastic mineral composites for the production of 3D molded parts and be introduced to the market in the near future.
