Objective
Chip collection in woodworking production facilities has long been a focus of attention for users, machine manufacturers, and tool manufacturers due to the harmful health effects, the fire and explosion hazards posed by wood dust, and high energy costs.
The fact that the problem of chip collection has not yet been comprehensively solved indicates that an effective and efficient methodology for the design, evaluation, and optimization of collection elements is lacking. Therefore, the proposed research project aims to establish flow simulation of chip flow during the machining of wood-based materials as a methodology for the design of collection elements. Simulations can provide new insights, particularly in studies of extraction hoods, because the processes inside a hood are generally not visible and, moreover, occur at very high speeds, which makes experimental investigation difficult.
Simulation der Spanerfassung beim Nutsägen von Holzwerkstoffen
The development of a simulation methodology aims to make the advantages of numerical simulation accessible to SMEs. Due to limited resources in terms of personnel and funding for the necessary measurement technology, SMEs are unable to perform parameter determination, modeling, and model validation on their own. The documented numerical studies are intended to serve as templates for companies and to identify opportunities for optimization. Furthermore, this makes the costs for SMEs calculable and ensures successful application.
Numerical simulation gives machine and tool manufacturers, as well as simulation service providers, the opportunity to improve the efficiency of existing and new extraction products, reduce development costs, and increase their profitability and competitiveness.
