Description:
In rear stages of axial compressors large relative radial clearances between rotor blades and casing cannot be avoided. The arising leakage flow in the tip region of blades has negative effects on efficiency, pressure rise and stability of the compressor.
The aim of the project is the development of a rotor blading with reduced sensitivity to large radial clearances. Beside of suitable blade designs the influence of circumferential casing grooves to reduce losses due to large relative tip clearances is investigated. Extensive measurements with steady and unsteady probes are done in the Low Speed Research Compressor at 3 tip clearances with and without casing grooves above the rotors. Numerical investigations provide more detailed analysis.
The project contributes to improved efficiencies and pressure ratios of future high pressure compressors for flight propulsion. The benefit in efficiency enables a substantial reduction of fossil fuels and therefor reduced CO2 emissions.
