This project is part of the joint research program AG Turbo ECOFLEX-turbo. The rotor of intermediate pressure steam turbines belongs to the lifetime leading components with respect to thermo-mechanical fatigue due to its large dimensions in combination with transient operation, centrifugal load and creep damage. Thereby, first blade grooves with unavoidable notches are of particular importance. The mechanical behavior of the blade roots inside the rotor‘s blade grooves strongly affects the rotor‘s expected fatigue life. However, this effect is not taken into account properly in state-of-the-art steam turbine
lifetime assessment. Thus, the project‘s scope is to investigate the mechanical behavior of blade roots inside the blade groove under transient thermal loadings similar to operation, and to quantify its impact on rotor fatigue life. Probabilistic approaches are employed to include scattering or poorly known boundary conditions in the investigation.
