The opening of the six-month CIPSEM course took place on Monday, Jan. 16, 2023, in the Rectorate Ballroom with course participants and guests, followed by a reception.

For the 46th time, a long course of the Centre for International Postgraduate Studies of Environmental Management (CIPSEM) was opened. CIPSEM invited the participants of the course, the Vice-Rector for University Culture Prof. Böhm and other guests to the Rectorate's ballroom on Mommsenstraße.

Dr. Anna Görner, the managing director of CIPSEM, warmly welcomed those present. Considering the past months and years, there was great joy that the course can take place on site in Dresden without further problems. Until July 14, 2023, the participants of the course - themselves already established professionals - will be further trained in current issues of environmental management by researchers from the field of construction and environment as well as by external experts. Here, know-how for preventive environmental protection and management is exchanged, taking into account ecological, socio-economic, technical and cultural aspects. By imparting theoretical expertise and implementation measures in the field of governance as well as interdisciplinary and intercultural cooperation, the program contributes to individual and institutional capacity building. Adaptations to climate change, biodiversity conservation, and more sustainable resource use can thus be better achieved.

Most of the participants bring with them from their home countries diverse problems but also experiences through which they can learn from each other and with each other. In this year's course 20 people from 18 countries of the global south are registered. After the course, they will become part of an alumni network that has grown to over 2600 members over the past 45 CIPSEM years.

Prorector Prof.in Böhm invited the students to discover Dresden and also the Federal Republic of Germany in all its facets and to learn about the numerous development approaches and efforts in the field of sustainability. The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) was represented by Ms. Svenja Kühnle. She emphasized that the current problems in environmental management are multidimensional, which makes it all the more important that so many different participants find common solutions.

Two participants, Mr. Lado Basilidze from Georgia and Ms. Sumaiyya Saleem from Pakistan, share the same experience from their home countries, as they briefly reported: the melting of glaciers in recent years is a major problem for water availability, for example. The mutual exchange of experiences made possible by the course, they said, contributes to global understanding. This was also confirmed by alumni Jeremy Raguain (Seychelles), who addressed the participants with a video message. He attended the course in 2020 and testifies to an enriching experience in his life.
