Art Loans / Artothek
*** The art collection has been given a new depot! This means that the collection can be safely stored for the long term. At the same time, this means that we will not be able to make any new loans until the winter semester 2025/26, as the depot is being set up. ***
Since the early 1950s, the university's extensive and high-quality art collection has been used to represent and decorate the public buildings on campus and the work and meeting rooms of university members. Increasingly, the university's art collection is becoming more visible to the public and is helping to raise the profile of art in the GDR, in East Germany and in Dresden.
THE ART COLLECTION OF THE TU DRESDEN

Blick in das Kunstbesitz-Depot der Kustodie
- The art collection, comprising around 5,000 works, reflects the art history of the second half of the 20th century and the 21st century with a regional focus on Dresden.
- The collection includes works on paper (drawings, prints, watercolors, gouaches, collages and others), paintings and architectural art.
- Influenced by Socialist Realism in the GDR era, the art collection includes in particular figurative works of all genres such as portraits (especially of Rectors and professors), landscapes, still lifes, genre portraits (everyday scenes) and historical paintings.
- The art collection has an annual acquisition budget and acquisitions are monitored by an advisory board.
- In addition, the art collection regularly receives donations from bequests and estates such as Peter Albert, Gudrun Brückel, Hans Christoph, Kerstin Franke-Gneuß, Friedrich Kracht, Christine Schlegel and others. Thanks to these donations, the collection can be substantially and systematically expanded and is now considered an important collection of Dresden art alongside the Städtische Galerie Dresden, the Kunstfonds or the Albertinum of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Dresden State Art Collections).

- In addition to collecting, preserving, researching and mediating, the tasks of the Kunstbesitz also include the presentation of the collection in order to make it accessible to a broad public.
- We advise on artistic and interior design as well as art in architecture competitions.
- Since 2016, the collection has been scientifically processed, presented in publications and changing exhibition contexts and increasingly included in teaching, including at the Institute of Art and Music at TU Dresden.
LOANS FOR EMPLOYEES
- Loan requests can be sent directly by email to the Office for Academic Heritage, Scientific and Art Collections' Art and Design Division. See contact boxes at the bottom of this page.
- When contacting us, please also send us photos of your office and the dimensions of the walls.
- The Art Collection team will provide expert art-scientific advice for the loan in front of the originals. Please allow around one hour for this appointment, as we would like to give you an understanding of the collection and explain the background to the artists and works.
- Please note that the preparation of the loans, such as mounting, framing and the professional installation of the works in the workrooms, will be carried out by a specialist company from the Art Handling department to be commissioned by the borrower.
"Art and culture - especially at universities and educational institutions, in so-called third places - are of immeasurable importance when it comes to communicating overarching values and issues that affect our society. Art plays a key role in this. TU Dresden's outstanding art collection is a place of transfer, a place where past and future meet in a very special way. It is our responsibility and task to preserve this unique collection of Dresden art and make it tangible."
