Exchange Program with Shinshu University Continues in 2025/26
The successful exchange program between the Medical Faculty of TU Dresden and Shinshu University in Matsumoto, Japan, will continue in the upcoming academic cycle. From November 2025 to March 2026, six medical students from Dresden will travel to Japan to complete a portion of their Practical Year. The participants Deborah Effenberger, Laura Östreich, Laura Maria Leonie Pecht, Paul Beck, and Pia Fee Gebhardt will receive funding through the DAAD program International Study and Training Partnerships (ISAP).
In addition to supporting individual student mobility, ISAP promotes the long-term and sustainable development of bilateral university partnerships. The funding for this cooperation was successfully secured by the Department of Science Support and International Collaborations of the Faculty of Medicine, ensuring financial support for the exchange through the end of 2027.
Furthermore, additional resources were obtained through Erasmus+. As a result, Luisa Preßgott will receive funding for her stay in Matsumoto. At the same time, for the first time, a Japanese student was able to be financially supported during her stay in Dresden.
At Shinshu University Hospital, the students will gain experience in a wide range of surgical and clinical departments. Their rotations include cardiovascular, gastroenterological, and hepatobiliary surgery, as well as breast and endocrine surgery and neurosurgery. These placements provide diverse insights into multiple medical disciplines and offer a solid foundation for further practical training.
At the same time, six Japanese guest students are currently concluding their research stays at the Medical Faculty of TU Dresden. They have been involved in various scientific research groups: Ms. Yume Furihata worked in Gynecology under the supervision of Prof. Wimberger; Mr. Kento Ishii gained experience in Neurosurgery under Prof. Uckermann; Ms. Aoi Kodama conducted research in the group of Dr. Steenblock; Mr. Kenta Kubota worked in Hematology under the guidance of Prof. Bornhäuser; and Ms. Momoko Okamura joined the Dermatology department under Prof. Günther. Ms. Rena Yamamoto spent her stay at OncoRay under the supervision of Prof. Kunz-Schughart.
The growing interest in the exchange program highlights its value for research, teaching, and international collaboration. Looking ahead, the partnership aims to further expand the exchange of academic staff and explore new opportunities for joint research initiatives. Regular bilateral meetings will support this process and help strengthen the long-term cooperation between Dresden and Matsumoto.
