Pioneer of clinical lipidology honored: Prof. Ulrich Julius receives DGFL Medal of Honor

Prof. Ulrich Julius.
German Society for Lipidology e. V. (DGFL) - Lipid League honors Prof. Ulrich Julius with a medal of honor in recognition of his outstanding achievements in metabolic research. This award honors his decades of exemplary work in research, teaching and patient care in the field of lipidology.
Ulrich Julius began his medical career in 1969 and shaped Dresden University Medicine for decades as a committed scientist and teacher. In 1992, he was appointed Professor at the Dresden Medical Academy and two years later as C3 Professor of Internal Medicine with a focus on metabolic diseases at the newly founded Medical Faculty of TU Dresden. From 1996 he was deputy director and from 2000 acting director of the Institute and Polyclinic for Clinical Metabolic Research, which was transferred to the Medical Clinic and Polyclinic III of the University Hospital in 2003.
With over 150 of his own publications, numerous lectures and co-authorships, Ulrich Julius has had a significant influence on the development of clinical metabolic research. He was involved in the organization of the internationally acclaimed lipid symposia in Dresden and gave lectures on lipid metabolism and nutrition. He was also actively involved in the introduction of a modern training model for students and played a pioneering role in shaping medical training at the faculty. For many years, he was a member of the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Medicine, spokesman for the interdisciplinary Clinical Research Network and a member of the Research Commission.
Ulrich Julius is one of the pioneers of lipoprotein apheresis in Germany. Together with Prof. Markolf Hanefeld, he introduced this form of therapy for high-risk patients with severe lipometabolic disorders in Dresden back in 1990. Under his leadership, the Apheresis Centre at Dresden University Hospital developed into a nationally recognized institution for complex metabolic diseases. However, his commitment went far beyond clinical care: as co-founder of the German Lipoprotein Apheresis Registry (DLAR), he systematically documented and analyzed the treatment results in order to scientifically prove the effectiveness and benefits of the therapy. Patients are still benefiting from this life-saving method today.

Background
The German Society for Lipidology (DGFL) - Lipid-Liga e. V. is dedicated to the research, diagnosis and treatment of lipid metabolism disorders and atherosclerosis. Its aim is to improve the care of patients with lipid metabolism disorders and to promote the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
The DGFL Medal of Honor is a special award presented to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to lipidology. It is named after the French chemist Michel Eugène Chevreul, who discovered cholesterol. The commemorative medal, designed by the French engraver, medalist and artist Louis-Oscar Roty, was minted to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth in 1886.
