Second MEDiC Cohort Completes Theoretical Medical Studies
MEDiC-Studiendekan Prof. Klaus Zöphel gratuliert den Studierenden zum erfolgreichen Abschluss des theoretischen Studienabschnitts.
The second class of the model degree program in human medicine at the TUD Faculty of Medicine and Chemnitz Medical Campus has completed the theoretical portion of their studies and recently celebrated this achievement with their families in the ballroom of the Gynecology Clinic.
The MEDiCs organized the farewell event themselves. They showed photos from their daily lives over the past five years in Chemnitz and humorously looked back on their time as students. Lecturers sent video messages conveying their best wishes for the future. The students tested each other’s knowledge with a quiz, demonstrating just how well they’ve gotten to know one another during their studies. Yearbooks were distributed as mementos of their time together. The event concluded with a champagne reception where everyone toasted to the future.
36 of the 50 students are now moving on to the next phase. Some of them will begin their clinical rotation at Dresden University Hospital in November, and others will start their clinical rotation at Chemnitz Hospital. Some students still have exams to take, are working on their doctoral dissertations, or are going abroad for a while. Once the students have completed their clinical year and passed the final section of the three-part medical examination, they will receive their medical license. Ideally, they will then remain in the Southwest Saxony region as physicians. The goal of the degree program, in addition to increasing the number of medical school spots in Saxony, is, above all, to strengthen the next generation of physicians in rural areas through high-quality training.
MEDiC at a Glance
In the 2020/21 winter semester, the first 50 students began their medical studies in the MEDiC model program at Chemnitz Medical Campus. The seventh cohort has recently began its studies.
The model degree program serves as an innovation platform for testing new teaching methods, concepts, and care models within the context of the Chemnitz Hospital, a tertiary care facility, and is designed to be transferable to other regions as well as to contribute to the further development of medical innovations in southwestern Saxony. It distinguishes itself from traditional medical education through its organ-system-based and practice-oriented instruction in specific areas of expertise. The use of digital teaching methods plays a significant role. All courses are continuously evaluated and refined.
Admission to the degree program takes place through the central admissions process administered by the Foundation for University Admissions. The chances of securing a spot are further increased by participating in both the university-independent Test for Medical Degree Programs (TMS) and the MEDiC-specific selection interviews, which are taken into account during the application process.
The program is based on the Licensing Regulations for Physicians and encompasses 32 areas of competence. After two years of study, students take the first part of the equivalency exam. One year after passing this part, the second and third parts of the equivalency exam follow. The equivalency exam corresponds to the first section of the Medical Examination. After another two years of study, students take the second section of the Medical Examination. The clinical rotation begins after the second section has been successfully completed. It is completed in four training phases. The third section of the Medical Examination takes place after the completion of the clinical rotation.
