BBD general
The BioBank Dresden (BBD), located on the Dresden hospital campus, was jointly established in 2018 by the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden, the Carl Gustav Carus Faculty of Medicine at TUD Dresden University of Technology, the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf.
Nowadays, modern biobanking on a large scale is no longer conceivable without the use of appropriate technology, professional quality management and very good networking in the biobanking environment. A strong focus on sample quality and close cooperation enable us to offer you this service.
In principle, two different collections can be established within BioBank Dresden.
1. Establishment of an institutional collection
Institutional samples (broad consent samples) are samples of biospecimen that are collected and stored on the basis of broad consent from patients. They do not serve any previously defined research purpose and can, under certain conditions, be used for research. The respective collection manager, which is usually the attending physician or the attending clinic, has sample sovereignty. BioBank Dresden has a current, positive vote for this institutional collection from the Ethics Committee of the TUD Dresden University of Technology. There are several broad consents for different patient and subject groups: for adults (including oncology), for healthy subjects and in the future also for children and their guardians.
2. development of a study-specific collection
Study-specific collectives are processed, stored and later returned on the basis of separate, specific consent forms and ethics votes for the respective clinical study. These specific collections are managed by BioBank Dresden.

The quality assurance of BioBank Dresden is based on various pillars.
The tissue bank TNTB has been independently certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2008 since 2010.
The integrated liquid biobank DILB is an integrated biobank in the regulated environment of the quality management system of the Institute for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, which is accredited as a medical laboratory (according to DIN EN ISO 15189) and as a testing laboratory (according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025) by the Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH (DAkkS). The aim of BioBank Dresden is a joint accreditation according to DIN EN ISO 20387:2018 (Biotechnology - Biobanking - General requirements for biobanking). The work of the German Biobank Node is gratefully used for the continuous further development of our biobank in line with the latest requirements for modern biobanking. We participate in round robin tests, take advantage of various training options and welcome auditors to assess our established work processes.
If you have any questions regarding our quality assurance processes, please contact our quality manager Dr. Susann Witt.
