transCampus Science to Business funds two projects with 75.000€ each in 2022
Within the transCampus Science to Business (transCampus S2B) TU Dresden is funding two outstanding projects with 75.00€ per project in 2022. The funds are provided through the Excellence Initiative in order to foster the translation of academic research towards entrepreneurial activities. Therewith, the transCampus S2B bridges the gap between the funding schemes of start-up and project funding. Both projects selected this year build on a cooperation between TU Dresden and King’s College London.
Prof. Nikolaos Perakakis, newly appointedProfessor of Metabolic and Vascular Medicine at TU Dresden, and Prof. Francesco Rubino, Chair of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery at King’s College London, develop highly sensitive and specific tests based on few blood parameters for the diagnosis and staging of NAFLD (Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) and liver fibrosis. These tests will enable the routine screening of millions of patients at high risk for NAFLD in primary care setting in order to ensure a timely diagnostic and treatment in an early stage.
The project „Development of smart sensors for continuous monitoring of blood gases and key laboratory parameters for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)” is conducted within the cooperation of Prof. Peter Spieth (TU Dresden) and Dr. Federico Formenti (King’s College London). The main objective of this joint project is to generate proof-of-concept evidence demonstrating the capability of miniaturized sensors to measure vital laboratory parameters within the ECMO circuit at the bedside. The goal is to develop a fully functional prototype and progress the sensor platform towards a medical product in clinical use.
