Today is World Diabetes Day 2025 - a day that reminds us of the importance of education, prevention, and innovative approaches in diabetes care.
Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a common and serious complication of diabetes mellitus. In this condition, fluid accumulates in the macula, the area responsible for sharp central vision, which can lead to significant visual impairment.
Several treatment options are available for DME, all of which aim to reduce swelling of the macula. These therapies act symptomatically but do not address the underlying cause of the disease. Successful treatment therefore requires good blood glucose control. Consequently, the management of DME always takes place in close collaboration with other medical specialties, particularly general medicine, diabetology, and cardiology.
Within the MiHUBx project, the Zentrum für Medizinische Informatik, together with its project partner Klinikum Chemnitz, is developing a clinical dashboard that integrates ophthalmological findings with relevant parameters from other medical specialties. This allows treating physicians to better understand the patient’s overall situation and make well-informed therapeutic decisions.
The data exchange is based on FHIR profiles from the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) and EyeMatics, complemented by custom extensions for biomarkers that have not yet been represented. The dashboard is being further developed toward SMART on FHIR to enable interoperable and vendor-independent integration into existing clinical systems.
The dashboard is being developed by an interdisciplinary team:
Prof. Dr. Katrin Engelmann, Gabriel Stolze, and Jayden Maurice Tannenhauer from Klinikum Chemnitz gGmbH contribute the clinical perspective, while Sophia Grummt, Hamed Mishian, and Katja Hoffmann from the Faculty of Medicine at TU Dresden and the Zentrum für Medizinische Informatik (ZMI) are responsible for the design and technical implementation.
