MII Anniversary Symposium
10 years of the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) – University Medicine Dresden as an active part of this story
What began 10 years ago as a shared vision is today a viable network that connects research and care. At the MII Anniversary Symposium 2026 at the DBB Forum Berlin on March 24–25, this became clearly visible: a decade of progress and many next steps that still need to be taken.
University Medicine Dresden, in particular the ZMI, but also our colleagues from the ZEGV and the Digital Health research group of TUD and from general practice, showed a strong presence at the event:
🔶 Anne Seim, as networking coordinator of the MII-junior research groups, placed the focus on the young forces: she presented the work of the junior groups and moderated the session “Next Gen MII” as well as the captivating science slam.
The DigiHubs at the center:
🔶 Prof. Dr. Martin Sedlmayr, head of the Dresden innovation hub MiHUB, moderated the session on the future of the Digital Progress Hubs Health and opened the first joint DigiHub Congress. He emphasized emphatically that the future of data-based medicine can only succeed if, in addition to university medicine, outpatient practices, care facilities and rehabilitation centers are consistently integrated. The DigiHubs do not see themselves as short-term projects, but as catalysts for sustainable, scalable solutions that endure beyond funding periods and create real added value for care and research.
🔶 Prof. Dr. Hannes Schlieter contributed the presentation “Development of a patient portal to improve clinical collaboration between outpatient and inpatient service providers” and outlined how digital patient portals improve cross-sector networking and promote “patient empowerment”.
🔶 Dr. Karen Voigt, in the DigiHubs panel discussion in which opportunities and challenges of transferring university structures into broad care were addressed, placed the focus on the future perspectives of MiHUB.
Women power: 3 Dresden speakers shaped the summarizing panel discussion spanning 10 years on the findings and perspectives of the MII working groups:
🔶 Dr. Elisa Henke – spokesperson WG EXTERNAL DATA
🔶 Dr. Claudia Heine – spokesperson WG COMMUNICATION
🔶 Gabriele Müller – spokesperson WG CONSENT
They acknowledged the successes of their respective AGs, precisely named internal as well as external challenges, addressed open tasks and fields of action, and at the same time directed the view toward the sustainable use as well as the future-proof continuation of the created structures and contents.
We thank all participants for the great commitment and very much enjoyed the retrospective on a decade of active participation within the MII as well as the outlook on future fields of work. ☺️
