Together with colleagues from the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, researchers of the IMB developed a practical guide to help doctors monitor tyrosine kinase inhibitor levels (namely imatinib) in children with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Using real-world data from 72 patients, we showed that the established adult plasma level of 1,000 ng/mL is also effective for children, and that the drug dose is the main factor influencing blood levels. The work provides clear steps for interpreting measurements taken at non-ideal times. The corrected measurements and the consolidated interpretation of plasma levels improves the early detection of under-exposure and supports dose adjustments for better treatment outcomes.
