Focus Area Digitalization in Nursing
Vision
Our vision is to systematically unlock healthcare data across all sectors using patient care pathways and make it interoperably accessible for nursing research and nursing science. Through this comprehensive integration of data, we aim to achieve sustainable optimization of nursing care that ensures seamless information flow across all sectors.
The focus area of Digitalization in Nursing serves as a cross-cutting work domain across all research priorities of the Medical Informatics Chair and intersects with the research areas of Interoperability, Data Science & AI, and Usability & Technology Acceptance.
Background
The ongoing demographic shift and increase in multimorbidity are leading to a steadily growing societal need for professional nursing care, further intensified by the progressive nursing shortage. This development poses significant challenges to the healthcare system, requiring a strategic realignment of nursing care.
In this context, the scope of nursing practice has expanded significantly in recent years. Beyond direct patient care in basic and treatment nursing, process coordination, particularly in the form of case management, has become a central responsibility.
The integration of evidence-based knowledge, for example through the implementation of clinical pathways or the application of decision support systems based on national expert standards, is becoming increasingly important. The use of information technologies, interoperability standards, and artificial intelligence can provide cross-sector support, not only enhancing the relevance of nursing informatics but also gaining importance amid changing healthcare landscapes and the increased integration and use of digital health technologies.
Focus Areas
Our focus is on the systematic development of nursing data, which will be consolidated into a standardized nursing core dataset and made accessible to nursing research and nursing science. Implementing this project requires precise semantic and syntactic mapping. Another focus of our work lies in active participation in nursing research projects conducted based on selected nursing use cases.
