Joint Meeting of 5th Annual IRTG 2251 Retreat with International Roadshow in Dresden
Thanks to the participation of the transCampus network and International training program in the field of diabetes and metabolism, a panel of experts, high-profile speakers and excellent young scientists came together creating an ideal platform to address various challenges and share their expertise.
As a result, the 5th Annual Meeting of the IRTG 2251 ”Immunological and cellular strategies in metabolic disease” was firstly united with the International Roadshow “"New Therapeutic Strategies in Apheresis, Cell and Gene Therapy in Diabetes and Metabolic Disease" from September 13th to 15th, 2023 in Dresden and offered an unique platform that went beyond the typical offerings of diabetes and metabolite association congresses.
The meeting was opened with an impressive introduction by Prof. Stefan Bornstein, Dean of transCampus, and Professor Richard Trembath, Senior Vice President (Health & Life Sciences) of King's College London and Executive Director of King’s Health Partners, welcoming over 80 participants from the Universities of Dresden and London, invited international guests as well as from industry partners to this special event.
Professor Richard Trembath also took the opportunity to meet Prof. Angela Rösen-Wolff (Vice-Rector Research TU Dresden), Prof Zeissig (Head of research group “Mucosal Immunology/ Inflammation and Carcinogenesis”), Prof. Andrea Pfennig (Member of transCampus IRTG 2773 “Risk Factors and Pathomechanisms of Affective Disorders”) and Prof. Andreas Linkermann (Member of transCampus IRTG2251) to receive an overview of Dresden research environment and the current joint projects of the transCampus between Dresden and London.
Professor Trembath's participation and intense commitment throughout the meeting underline the importance of this event and the close connection between King's Collage and the Dresden Campus. It is expected that this visit will lay the foundation for further fruitful collaborations and joint research projects between the institutions.
The first day of the congress was all about “New Therapeutic Strategies in Apharesis, Cell and Gene Therapy in Diabetes, and Metabolic Diseases” and numerous members from industry/ start-ups, clinic and research presented the newest developments in these topics.
The agenda of the following two days was focused on IRTG2251 projects and especially on their students, their projects and their scientific career. The students presented their projects and received constructive input and valuable feedback from their Dresden and London PIs and fellow PhD/MD students.
As another highlight of the meeting, it was a special honor to welcome the Prof. Nadey Hakim (London), Prof. Julio Lucinio (New York) and Prof. Maha Saber-Ayad (Sharjah) as invited speakers to the congress. These experts-in-their’s-fields were sharing inspiring lectures and their latest research data with the audience, followed by lively and enthusiastic discusssions.
The annual IRTG2251 retreats are substantial for the progress and success of the student’s research as it creates the ideal platform to get in touch with the respective partner institutes, but also members from industry and start-ups, and to hold strategic discussions. This event presented the students' excellent research progress that benefits from the cooperation, incentivized new project ideas of the new student cohort and strengthened the scientific ties between the two partner institutes Dresden and London.
This Joint Meeting highlights the commitment and determination of the international community to jointly address the challenges in diabetes and metabolic medicine and find innovative solutions for patients and the healthcare system.
