The Never-Ending Story of Polydopamine
Polydopamine has been the subject of numerous research projects for years. This biomaterial offers many advantages, as it exhibits a certain degree of electrical conductivity and also adheres very well to surfaces. However, the structure of polydopamine is only partially understood. Using in-situ Raman spectroscopy and IR imaging spectroscopy, the temporal progression of polymerization in solution and as a film is being investigated at the molecular level and quantitatively. Previous assumptions that the polymer forms through covalent C–C bonds could not be confirmed. Instead, the vibrational spectra reveal couplings via amino and hydroxy groups.
