Flexible Wireless Implants for Personalized Real-Time Neurological Monitoring – FreeNemo
This project is being carried out in cooperation with Chemnitz University of Technology and the Department of Neurosurgery at Klinikum Chemnitz gGmbH.
To date, monitoring of neurological function and intracranial parameters has only been possible in specialized clinical settings. However, there is an urgent medical need for minimally invasive, long-term measurement and monitoring technologies for neurological function that can be seamlessly integrated into existing diagnostic systems. The “FreeNeMo” project addresses this need by developing flexible, wireless implants for real-time neurological monitoring. For the first time, these implants will enable the continuous monitoring of multiple critical brain functions, such as electrical activity, intracranial pressure, temperature, pH, and oxygen saturation. The miniaturized sensors are being developed at Chemnitz University of Technology. Testing of the sensors will initially take place in the laboratory using chicken embryos and later in the Department of Neurosurgery.

The consortium behind the “FreeNeMo” project thus brings together expertise in the fields of materials science, microelectronics, and medical technology, which is crucial for the development of advanced neurological monitoring systems. Chemnitz University of Technology, with its MAIN Research Center, offers state-of-the-art facilities for research into nanomaterials and flexible electronics. The Chemnitz Medical Campus of the MF at TU Dresden, as well as the MF’s Dresden campus, have extensive experience in the fields of neurosurgery, clinical neuromonitoring, and biomedical engineering.
