Time- and Space-Resolved Molecular Spectroscopy of Dental Composites
Composite materials are used in the treatment of dental lesions, such as those caused by tooth decay. These materials are typically cured through photo-induced polymerization. The goal is to achieve both high adhesion of the composite material to the dentin or enamel and, at the same time, high hardness of the filling. IR spectroscopic ATR imaging is used to understand time- and depth-dependent polymerization. The results show that the various monomers in the composite material polymerize differently, which means that adhesion and hardness can be optimized simultaneously through intelligent photo-induced polymerization.
