Characterization and Classification of Tissues and Cells Using Vibrational Spectroscopic Methods

The differentiation of cells and tissues in terms of their nature, pathological processes, or function at the molecular level has been a central core research area for many years. Various techniques of Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and near-infrared spectroscopy are used for this purpose. Infrared spectroscopic imaging, in particular, provides an important methodological basis for this work. Various chemometric methods are employed to analyze the spectra. The spectrum ranges from univariate and multivariate methods to supervised classification. The following areas are currently being investigated:
- Differentiation and characterization of tumors of the pancreas, liver, and esophagus using IR spectroscopic imaging and, during surgery, using IR fiber spectroscopy and ATR spectroscopy.

Collaboration: Chemnitz Hospital gGmbH, Department of Neurosurgery, Prof. Dr. M. Kirsch - Study on the molecular spectroscopic characterization of middle ear pathology, particularly the differentiation of necrotic, granulation, and inflamed tissue using IR spectroscopic imaging.
Collaboration: Department of Otolaryngology, Prof. Dr. M. Neudert. - Research into the molecular signatures of Hirschsprung’s disease; identification of ganglionic and aganglionic tissue using IR spectroscopic imaging.
