The program is aimed at clinician scientists who are in their advanced specialist training and show a proven scientific excellence. Medical scientists with oncological background are also welcome to apply.
Applications are open to researchers who obtained a medical (Dr.med.) or scientific doctorate (Dr.rer.nat/PhD) and show proven scientific excellence in oncological research.
Currently no new application rounds for group leaders are planned.
PhD candidates can be recruited via the DIGS-BB. MD candidates can be recruited via the Carus Promotionskolleg.

In general, each case must be considered individually. In agreement with the Sächsiche Landesärztekammer (SLÄK) , research periods of up to one year can currently count towards board certification.
The application as a tandem team within the program enables colleagues with aligned research focus to flexibly share laboratory time and expertise.
In contrast, tandem projects are supported research groups with different research areas that are encouraged to establish a joint project.
In addition to financing the own position, junior research group leaders receive funding for a PhD position, a technical assistance, material and travel expenses for an initial period of 36 months. For clinician scientists, part-time models are also possible in order to optimally coordinate clinical and research activities.
