Electives
INFLUENCE OF NUTRITION AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY ON HEALTH
Nutrition and physical activity are becoming increasingly important in the context of preventive measures, as they can be used to reduce the likelihood of chronic degenerative diseases, as well as tumors, in a relatively simple and cost-effective manner. This elective complements the existing curriculum by providing an in-depth understanding of the underlying physiological mechanisms. Relevant fundamentals of nutritional physiology are discussed, and based on this, possibilities of prevention through nutrition for different disease patterns are illustrated. Furthermore, effects of targeted nutrition in specific disease patterns are explained. In another part of the course, the health-promoting effects of physical activity are discussed. Extensive evidence-based studies will be analyzed and the quantitative relationship between physical activity and preventive effects in different diseases will be elaborated. In addition, the current understanding of the mediation of the effects of physical activity will be discussed.
BASICS OF SCIENTIFIC WORK - RESEARCH, SCIENTIFIC WRITING AND PRESENTATION
Supervision:
Dr. rer. nat. Lydia Günther (Medical Biology)
Prof. Dr. Irakli Kopaliani (Institute of Physiology)
This elective subject teaches the basics of scientific work in an application-oriented way. The focus is on practical exercises. Under the guidance of a subject-specific supervisor the students work on an own scientific topic. Based on a scientific question, students carry out literature research in special databases, process, evaluate and critically reflect on the results and summarize them in various forms of presentations (abstract, poster, talk).
