New publications from the working group

A lot has happened in the working group over the past few months: Six new publications show just how diverse current research into microorganisms is and how many exciting questions are still to be discovered.
Several of the papers deal with the soil bacterium Bacillus subtilis, an important model organism in microbiology. The studies provide new insights into how bacteria react to stress, deal with nutrient deficiencies or coordinate complex developmental processes. Such fundamental findings help to better understand the adaptability of microbial cells - a key topic in modern microbiology.
Another success is the discovery of coerumycin, a previously unknown lantibiotic natural substance. Such molecules are the focus of research because microorganisms use them to interact with their environment and other microbes.
The publications also mark important personal milestones. Several papers were written as part of doctoral projects that have now been successfully completed or are on the home straight. They therefore also represent the intensive research work and perseverance behind a dissertation.
The publication of our science communication project Bakteriopolis in Microbial Biotechnology represents another special milestone. It shows how microbiological research and social dialog can be successfully combined.
Together, the new publications show what research is all about: Curiosity, collaboration and a willingness to explore uncharted territory. We congratulate all authors on these successes and look forward to the next chapters of this scientific journey.
