1968-1972: Primary School

1972-1981: Secondary School

1981-1984: Vocational training and employed as gardener.

University Education:

1984- 1990: Study of Biology, University of Bonn.

1990- 1993: Doctoral Thesis, University of Bonn.

1993- 2000: Scientific assistant at the Botanical Institute in Bonn.

December 1999: Habilitation

10/2000- 3/2002: Deputy-Professor for Botany at the University of Cologne.

Since April 2002: Full-Professor for Botany, Director of the Botanic Garden and Herbarium Dresdense, TU -Dresden

2006-2013, since 2016: Head of the Department for Biology (since 2018 Dean of  the Faculty for Biology)

1999 Research Award of the Philip-Morris-Foundation,

2014 Innovation Award of the Leibnitz Institute for Polymer Research, Dresden

2016, 2017 “Materialica Gold Award – Surface and Technology”

2014 Elected as Member of the Saxonian Academy of Sciences.
