Hem-copper-oxygen reductases are respiratory enzymes that catalyze the reduction of oxygen to water and the shift of protons through the membrane. The oxygen consumption is inhibited by various substances. In the present publication we have investigated the relatively unknown inhibition of cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) by isocyanate using surface enhanced resonance Raman spectroscopy (SERR) and propose a molecular mechanism of catalysis inhibition based on this.
